Plotting Points on the Coordinate Plane (Grades 5–6)

The coordinate plane is a grid with a horizontal x-axis and a vertical y-axis crossing at the origin (0, 0). A point is named by an ordered pair (x, y): the first number says how far right (or left), the second how far up (or down). To plot (3, 2): start at the origin, go right 3, then up 2. Order matters — (3, 2) and (2, 3) are different points.

Worked Example

Seeing it in action

1
Worked example

Plot the point (3, 2).

From the origin, move right 3 along the x-axis, then up 2. Mark the point. → 3 right, 2 up.

Visual model
x y (0,0) (3,2)

Move right 3, then up 2.

Interactive Check

Try a few

Where is (0, 4)?
Answer: on the y-axis, 4 up
Plot (5, 1): how far right, how far up?
Answer: right 5, up 1
Which comes first in (x, y)?
Answer: x (horizontal)
