OLSAT Level C workbook sample: text version

The OLSAT Level C workbook sample written out in words, for screen readers and for anyone who prefers text. It has the same instructions, questions and answers as the PDF.

Every picture is described: what is drawn, where it is and how it is filled. The descriptions do not give the answers away. The answers and explanations are in a closed section at the end of the page; open it when you are ready.

Download the PDF (7 pages, 719 KB). The PDF is a picture of the printed pages.

Download this text version as a PDF A tagged PDF with headings and lists, for screen readers and for keeping offline; the answers are in their own section at the end.

About this sample

These five pages come from the practice-by-type bank in our OLSAT Grade 2 / Level C workbook. Color printing is best for this sample, because some instructions name colors; on a black-and-white copy, letter labels (R, G, Y, B) mark each colored shape.

Parent instructions

Before you begin

Read the Parent Reads Aloud directions before the child chooses. For picture analogies, find the same relationship. For pattern matrices and series, look across each row for the change. This is a short learning sample, not a scored screening test.

A small, complete practice session

  1. Try one or two questions before looking at the answers.
  2. Ask: What did you notice? Let the child explain first.
  3. Check the worked answers at the back of this sample.
  4. Revisit one idea another day. You do not need to finish today.

Questions

10 questions, in the order they are printed, on 5 pages.

How the pictures are described

  • Some questions have a direction for the parent to read aloud. It is given first, as printed.
  • The pictures in the listening and analogy questions are color drawings. A few are printed blurred and blocky; the descriptions say so.
  • Questions 1 and 2 on workbook page 32 ask for a red circle and a blue circle, so they depend on color. In the PDF each colored shape on that page has its color letter printed under it (R red, G green, Y yellow, B blue), so a black-and-white print or a child who finds colors hard to tell apart can still follow the direction; the descriptions below name every color.
  • “Empty” means a white shape with a black outline. “Solid” means filled in black.
  • The answer choices are drawn in their own boxes, at a different scale from the puzzle, so sizes in the choices are described compared with the other choices.
  • On the printed page, each question ends with a row of answer circles, labelled like the choices, for marking a choice.
